Staff work around the system
Necessary decisions happen in email and side files because the main system cannot carry the work through.
Custom business software · Edmonton + remote
I build internal tools, operations systems, and web applications around the work your team needs to do. Bring requests, staff workflows, and reporting into an application that fits the business.
Work directly with Brad Conklin, an independent software developer based in Edmonton.

Recognize the bottleneck
Your team may already know the process. The difficulty is carrying it through several tools, giving everyone the right view, and keeping the information consistent.
01
Necessary decisions happen in email and side files because the main system cannot carry the work through.
02
Operations, managers, and customers need access to different parts of the same work.
03
A packaged application may not express the quoting, booking, or account behaviour the business requires.
What I can build
01
Give staff one place to receive work, update records, manage approvals, and find the next action. Define access around the responsibilities of each role.
02
Collect the information a request needs, apply the right business rules, and carry an approved quote or booking into the team's schedule.
03
Make operational records searchable and turn them into useful views, dashboards, and exports. Agree on what each report means and which source supplies its information.
04
Build a browser-based product for staff or customers, with the accounts, administrative tools, workflows, and external connections it needs. Subscriptions and separate customer organizations can be included where relevant.
A shared record can support intake, operational work, and management reporting without every person working from a separate copy.

How projects start
Start with a free fit review. If the requirements are clear enough, I provide a fixed quote directly. If important questions need investigation first, I’ll propose a small planning phase with an agreed scope and price of no more than $500 USD.
Understand the people, information, and decisions the application needs to support.
Focus on one part of the operation and agree on what the finished work needs to do.
Review the important journeys with representative information and the people who will use them.
Put the agreed application into use, then decide whether another improvement is useful.
You keep the documented requirements, findings, recommended approach, scope boundaries, and acceptance criteria. When the build is viable and sufficiently defined, the handoff includes a fixed proposal for the first implementation, with timing and operating responsibilities. If the right answer is not to proceed, you receive the reasons and alternatives instead. You can use the handoff with Featherply, another developer, or nobody.
I check the important user journeys, plan how the application will go live, and explain what is needed to run it. We also agree on who will look after it once it is in use.

I’ll review your message and reply within two business days with any initial questions and a suggested next step. This initial fit review is free.
No paid work starts until its scope and price are agreed and you explicitly approve it.
I treat what you share as private and use it only to review your enquiry unless we agree to use it for a project. Share only what you are comfortable sending; a short description or anonymized example is enough to start.
